Advanced Islamic Studies

Curriculum

The programme covers the essential Islamic sciences and combines memorisation, explanation and guided reading, all delivered in the Arabic language. It follows the traditional method combining memorisation and explanation and follows a structured five-year curriculum path.

• Tajweed (Completed): Tuhfat al-Atfal and Al-Muqaddimah al-Jazariyyah, with selected reading from Minhat Dhi al-Jalal.
• Qira'at (Completed): memorisation and explanation of Al-Shatibiyyah, with a complete reading in the seven recitations.
• Arabic grammar (Nahw) (Completed): memorisation and explanation of Al-Ajrumiyyah.
• Hadith terminology (Completed): memorisation and explanation of Al-Bayquniyyah.
• Usul al-Fiqh (Completed): memorisation and explanation of Nazm al-Waraqat.
• Qur'anic sciences (Completed): selected topics from Manna' al-Qattan's Mabahith fi Ulum al-Qur'an.
• Hadith (This year's topic): memorisation and explanation of Umdat al-Ahkam, with guided reading from Bulugh al-Maram.
• Morphology (Sarf): explanation of Tasrif al-Izzi.
• Rhetoric (Balaghah): Mi'at al-Ma'ani wal-Bayan and Al-Balaghah al-Wadihah.
• Tafseer: a concise tafseer of the complete Qur'an.
• Maliki fiqh: memorisation and explanation of Al-Risalah by Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani.
• Fiqh principles: memorisation and explanation of Manzumah al-Qawa'id al-Fiqhiyyah.
• Maqasid al-Shari'ah: study of the objectives of Islamic law.
• Logic (Mantiq): explanation of Al-Sullam al-Munawraq.
• Aqidah: explanation of Al-Usul al-Thalathah, Al-Qawa'id al-Arba' and Lum'at al-I'tiqad.
• Adab and adhkar: memorisation of Al-Adab wal-Adhkar.
• Qur'anic similarities: principles for mastering similar Qur'anic wording.
• Seerah: study of Al-Raheeq al-Makhtum and the historical atlas of the Prophet's biography.
• History: Islamic history, civilisation and general history, with guided reading.

Course structure

• Memorisation: Students are required to memorise the hadiths of Umdat al-Ahkam.
• Explanation: Detailed commentary, explanation and discussion sessions to understand the hadiths and derive the fiqh from them.
• Class attendance: Attendance to the weekly sessions is required.
• Homework: Completion of all assigned homework is mandatory.
• Examinations: Regular exams will be held approximately every three weeks to evaluate comprehension and retention.

Requirements for Enrolment

• Arabic comprehension: Applicants must have the ability to understand Arabic to follow the lessons, though fluency in speaking is not required.
• Motivation: A strong commitment is essential. Great achievements are not attained through mere wishing but through determination and effort.
